How to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer: 10 Florist-Approved Tips
Simple, florist-approved habits that keep fresh roses and mixed bouquets looking beautiful for longer, from the first cut to daily water care.
A beautiful bouquet deserves a long life. The good news: with a few simple habits, most fresh flowers can stay vibrant well beyond the first week. These steps work for roses, mixed bouquets and greenery alike.
1. Give the stems a fresh cut right away
As soon as your flowers arrive, trim 1 to 2 inches from each stem with sharp scissors or a clean knife. Cut at a 45-degree angle: the slanted surface exposes more of the stem and helps it absorb water instead of sitting flat on the bottom of the vase.
2. Start with a spotless vase
Bacteria are the number one reason flowers fade early. Wash the vase with warm, soapy water and rinse it well before filling it. If your bouquet came with a glass vase, it is ready to use after a quick rinse.
3. Use cool, fresh water and flower food
Fill the vase about two-thirds full with cool water and add the flower food packet if one is included. Flower food provides sugar for energy and helps keep the water clean.
4. Remove leaves below the waterline
Any leaf that sits in the water will start to decompose and cloud it. Strip the lower leaves so only clean stems are submerged.
5. Change the water every two days
Replace the water completely every one to two days, rinse the vase, and give the stems a small fresh trim each time. This single habit makes the biggest difference in how long a bouquet lasts.
6. Keep flowers away from heat and direct sun
Place your bouquet somewhere cool and bright, but out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, heating vents and electronics that give off heat. Warmth speeds up wilting.
7. Keep fruit at a distance
Ripening fruit, especially apples and bananas, releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers age faster. Keep your arrangement away from the fruit bowl.
8. Watch out for drafts
Open windows, fans and air conditioning blowing directly on the flowers dry out petals quickly. A calm spot in the room is ideal.
9. Remove fading blooms
Flowers in a mixed bouquet open and fade at different speeds. Gently remove any stem that is past its best so the rest of the arrangement stays fresh and the water stays clean.
10. Revive a drooping rose
If a rose head starts to bend, recut the stem and place it in lukewarm water for an hour or two. Often the stem will rehydrate and the bloom will lift again.
